Elephant's Toothpaste

A safe version of our "Elephant Toothpaste" demonstration you can try at home.

You'll Need:

  • a 500ml narrow necked clear bottle
  • a small funnel
  • 100 ml or 1/2 cup of vinegar
  • a squirt of ultra liquid dish soap
  • food colouring & glitter (optional)
  • baking soda
  • a spoon

What to do:

  1. place the bottle on a flat easy to clean surface, large shallow tub or sink
  2. using the funnel, pour the vinegar into the bottle, then remove funnel
  3. add soap (and colouring / glitter) to the vinegar and gently swirl the bottle to mix them
  4. add 1 - 2 spoons of baking soda into the bottle.

What's Going On?
The vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base. When they mix, a chemical reaction takes place, producing a gas which causes the fizzing and churns up the soap to make foam.

Safety
Keep your face distant from the mouth of the bottle.
