2 Hour Classroom Workshops for Grades 2-7 - $80 per workshop*
Our workshops combine theory and application with interactive hands-on activities, experiments and demonstrations. All workshops are developed to correspond to the 2005 Prescribed Learning Outcomes for grades 2 - 7. Therefore students are able to explore science, engineering and technology in a fun and interactive manner, while satisfying curriculum requirements. Available May 18 th to June 18 th 2010!
All 2010 Classroom workshops are tailored to the various grade levels. Teachers may pick the workshop that fits their needs, and students will receive age-appropriate and engaging curriculum.
2010 Classroom Workshop Topics:
Radical Reactions
Transform the room from an ordinary classroom to an extraordinary Science Laboratory where everyone gets to be a chemist! Break out the beakers, grab some goggles and get ready to discover some of the crazy chemical reactions that happen every day. Workshop participants will be immersed in emulsions, and encouraged to concentrate on concentrations as they perform their own experiments.
The Human Machine
Learn about one of the most sophisticated machines in existance - the human body. This combination of simple machines has the finesse to draw a picture and the force to shoot a puck at over 100km/hour! Participants will find out what it takes to power and maintain this machine to keep it running at its best. Workshop topics will include kinesiology, forces, simple machines, and human body systems.
Power Up! - The Science of Electricity and Energy
There's nothing static about this electrifying workshop. Students will learn about current uses of energy as well as innovative new technologies that promise to define energy consumption of the future. Participants will get their imaginations charged up as they learn about electricity and harnessing alternative energies.
Forces of Nature
Have you ever wondered about the science behind some of the most spectacular weather phenomena? Why do we see seemingly strange weather patterns? What do these strange occurences mean for where we live? All these questions and more will be answered during this wild ride of a workshop. Topics will include the science of meteorology, the extreme environments weather patterns create, and the implications of climate change.

On-campus workshops expose participants to the University environment while they explore the dynamic fields of science, technology and engineering. Topics for the 2009/ 2010 on-campus workshops are listed below.
On-Campus Workshop Topics:
Physics and Engineering Olympiad
Are you ready for the 2010 Olympics? In this interactive hands-on workshop, students will work in teams to tackle various events while utilizing their scientific knowledge. Participants will investigate the cutting edge technologies used in the Olympics and how the world of engineering and physics has changed the face of this momentous event. Topics will include the fundamental theories and concepts of physics, such as energy, forces and simple machines, and their relationship to the world of engineering.
Captivating Chemistry
Chemistry from A to Z! In this workshop participants will explore the dynamic world of chemistry; Mendeleev would have been proud. They will be exposed to the chemistry that surrounds them in every day life and discover sub-disciplines such as organic and materials chemistry. Get your safety goggles and lab coats ready because this workshop is bound to involve some radical reactions!
Living in Science
Why is British Columbia so beautiful? Is it because of the wide array of habitats and wildlife? Or is it because of the various wonderful weather patterns we experience? This workshop focuses on the science encompassing our province and allows students to develop a new appreciation for the unique ecosystem that surrounds us. A variety of topics will be explored, including entomology, biodiversity and new technologies focused on the sustainability of Beautiful British Columbia.
Eat What You Want: The Science of Nutrition
Cheese Burgers or Broccoli? Become your very own dietitian in this interactive health based workshop. Participants will learn about how their food choices affect their everyday mental and physical performance. Activities and demonstrations will explore topics such as digestion, skeletal strength, muscular movement and molecular signaling.
